Biking boost for Totnes cyclists

We recently gave away a new Specialized bicycle for one lucky cyclist taking part in the Cycle Confidence sessions run by the South Hams council, check out the official word below…

A Totnes cyclist has won a brand new bicycle following a free training session run by South Hams District Council. Jo Coish collected the bike from Hot Pursuits Cycles in Totnes after winning a draw that took place as part of the Cycling and Walking Works project.

Over 50 people took part in the free individual cycle confidence sessions in the Autumn of 2012 which are run by qualified cycling instructors. The Cycling and Walking Works project aims to reduce congestion on busy Totnes roads and help people who are interested in sustainable travel and reducing their transport costs.

Bike winner Jo said: “I am absolutely thrilled to have won the bike, the cycle session itself was excellent – the instructor taught me lots more than I expected, showing me how to wear my cycle helmet correctly, signalling properly and tackling Totnes’ busy roundabouts. I now feel a lot more confident and will be using my bike for my shorter journeys in and around town. It was well worth doing, and better still it was free!”

Councillor Gorman, member for Totnes Town ward, South Hams District Council, said:  “Congratulations to Jo for winning the bike and for taking part in such a worthwhile session. We are always keen to encourage residents to take up cycling as it’s great for the environment, their wallets and their health!”

Councillor Vint, member for Totnes Town ward, South Hams District Council, said: “We need to cut congestion by making it easier to travel without a car. Buses, bicycles, electric bikes, Park & Ride and rickshaws are all part of the solution.”

The cycle confidence sessions are ongoing in 2013. They are open to anyone aged 16 or over who lives or works in Totnes and its surrounding villages.

Hot Pursuit Cycles of Totnes are a key partner of the project and can provide a free hire bike if people do not own their own cycle for the confidence sessions. Information on how to book a cycle confidence session is also available at the shop, along with advice about buying the right sort of bike.

South Hams District Council is working in partnership with Devon County Council to deliver the Cycling and Walking Works project, which is funded by the Local Sustainable Transport Fund.
